The Project Management Organization (PMO) is working
on the rehabilitation projects of the barrages under the responsibility
of the Irrigation and Power Department.
Currently, PMO is executing the Taunsa Barrage Emergency
Rehabilitation and Modernization Project, which is being implemented at
a cost of Rs 11 billion. The objective of this project is to ensure the
safety of the barrage and ensure uninterrupted water supply to the 1.75
million acres of cultureable land of Rajanpur, DG Khan and Muzaffargarth
Districts.
The Organization has also completed feasability studies
of Jinnah and Islam Barrages and the respective detailed designs are under
preparation. The civil works are expected to start in 2008.
TAUNSA BARRAGE EMERGENCY REHABILITATION & MODERNIZATION PROJECT
Taunsa barrage was constructed during 1953-1958 on Indus River to irrigate about two million acres in DG Khan, Rajanpur and Muzaffargarh districts. Taunsa barrage was the most problematic barrage and its safety was at stake. Punjab Irrigation & Power department realizing the gravity of the problem, conducted feasibility study of Taunsa barrage rehabilitation project through a joint venture of leading consultants in water sector i.e. NDC and NESPAK. An independent international Panel of Experts (POE) was also appointed to review the feasibility of Taunsa barrage rehabilitation project.
DETAIL DESIGN OF JINNAH BARRAGE
Detailed design consultancy for rehabilitation of Jinnah barrage has been awarded to JV of MM Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd., Mott Macdonald Ltd., UK, Nippon Koei and PES (Pvt.) Ltd on October 22, 2007. Consultancy service period for Jinnah barrage detailed design is ten months.
DETAIL DESIGN OF ISLAM BARRAGE
Detailed design consultancy for rehabilitation of Islam barrage has been awarded to JV of NESPAK (Pvt.) Ltd. and NDC in association with Integrated Consultancy Services (Pvt.) Ltd. on August 9, 2007. Consultancy service period for Islam barrage detailed design is ten months.
DETAIL DESIGN OF KHANKI BARRAGE
Detailed design consultancy for rehabilitation of Islam barrage has been awarded to Punjab Barrages Consultants (JV of NDC and NESPAK (Pvt.) Ltd. in association with Integrated Consultancy Services (Pvt.) Ltd.) on August 9, 2007. Consultancy service period for additional studies for hydel power generation and enhancing reservoir capacity of Khanki barrage is six months.
DETAIL DESIGN OF BALLOKI BARRAGE
Rehabilitation / up gradation works of Balloki barrage will be carried out under the supervision of PMO for Punjab barrages. Funds will be provided by Lower Bari Doab Canal Improvement Project (LBDCIP). PMU for LBDCIP is presently finalizing technical/ financial evaluation for hiring of detailed design consultants for rehabilitation / up gradation of Balloki barrage. Staff hired in PMO for Punjab barrages for this specific task will supervise the detailed design consultancy work and execution of the project afterward.
DETAIL DESIGN OF SULEMANKI BARRAGE
Strategic Planning & Reform Unit (SPRU) is planning for rehabilitation and up gradation of Sulemanki barrage through Punjab Irrigation & Agriculture Improvement Project (PIAIP). PMO for Punjab barrages is coordinating with SPRU for early finalization of preliminary work of execution of Sulemanki barrage project.
