Introduction of Bahawalpur Irrigation Zone

Bahawalpur Irrigation Zone consists of three Canal Circles and one Development Circle namely as under:

 

  • Bahawalpur Canal Circle
  • Bahawalnagar Canal Circle
  • Rahimyarkhan Canal Circle, and
  • Development Circle, Bahawalpur.

 Bahawalpur Canal Circle

Bahawalpur Canal Circle consists of 4 Nos.  Divisions namely Bahawalpur Canal Division, Ahmadpur Canal Division, Panjnad Headworks Division and Mailsi Syphon Division. It operates and maintains Sutlej Valley Canal System in Bahawalpur Canal Circle. In Bahawalpur Canal Circle 4 Nos. Main Canals viz Bahawal Canal Upper, Qaim Canal, Bahawal Canal Lower, Abbasia Canal and Abbasia Link Canal. Sidhnai – Mailsi – Bahawal (SMB Link) and Pakpattan – Islam (P.I. Link) are the Links which too fall under jurisdiction of Bahawalpur Circle.

On all these Canal System, there are two types of Canals viz Perennial and Non-perennial. Perennial Canals mostly feed the Desert Saline Water Area while Non-perennial Canals irrigate sweet water area. The Non-perennial Channels starts running from 15th April to 15th October of each year.

Bahawalpur Canal Circle covers gross area of 0.945 Million Hectors with Cultureable Commanded Area of 0.690 Million Hectors. There is 186 Kilometers length of Flood Bunds in the Circle. The total length of Link Canals falls in the jurisdiction of Bahawalpur Canal Circle is 288 Kilometers and length of Main Canal and Branches 339.50 Kilometers. The length of Distributaries, Minors and Sub Minors is 1971.09 Kilometers.

 

Bahawalnagar Canal Circle

Bahawalnagar Canal Circle consists of 3 Nos.  Divisions namely Sadiqia Canal Division, Hakra Canal Division and Fordwah Canal Division. It operates and maintains Sutlej Valley Canal System in Bahawalnagar and part of Bahawalpur District. In Bahawalnagar Canal Circle there are 2 Nos. Main Canals viz Sadiqia Canal and Fordwah Canal. Bahawalnagar Circle is at the Tail Command of Mangla Dam.

On all these Canal System, there are two types of Canals viz Perennial and Non-perennial. Perennial Canals mostly feed the Desert Saline Water Area while Non-perennial Canals irrigate sweet water area. The Non-perennial Channels starts running from 15th April to 15th October of each year.

Bahawalnagar Canal Circle covers gross area of 1.055 Million Hectors with Culture-able Commanded Area of 0.892 Million Hectors. There is 15.771 Kilometers length of Flood Bunds in the Circle. The total length of Main Canal and Branches is 358.26 Kilometers. The length of Distributaries, Minors and Sub Minors is 1783.17 Kilometers. Lift Irrigation Scheme is also working to provide irrigation facility to an area of 0.026 Million Hectors. It also maintains and operates 665.54 Kilometers long Drainage System.

Rahimyarkhan Canal Circle

Rahimyarkhan Canal Circles consists of four No. Divisions namely Rahimyarkhan, Khanpur, Dallas Canal Divisions and Tubewell Operation Division Khanpur.  It operates and maintains Sutlej Valley Canal System falling in Rahimyarkhan District. Rahimyarkhan Circle is at the tail Command of Tarbela Dam.

Rahimyarkhan Canal Circle covers gross area of 1.122 Million Hectors with Culture-able Commanded Area of 1.006 Million Hectors. There is 145.435 Kilometers length of Flood Bunds in the Circle. The total length of Main Canal and Branches is 335.52 Kilometers. The length of Distributaries, Minors and Sub Minors is 2339.182 Kilometers. The total No. of Saline Tubewells is 514. It also maintains and operates 578.51 Kilometers long Drainage System.

Development Circle Bahawalpur

Bahawalpur Development Circle is a newly created Circle.  It started functioning with effect from 1-7-2003. It consists of 3 No. Divisions namely Bahawalpur Development Division, Bahawalnagar Development Division and Rahimyarkhan Development Division.  It has been established for preparation of Development schemes and smooth execution of the schemes under Mega Projects.
