Responsibilities

  • To conduct model studies and propose the solutions for Flood Protection Works, Spillways, Weirs, River Bridges and Hydraulic Structures of Canals / Drains.
  • To optimize design of Hydropower Projects.
  • To optimize design of Barrages, Dams and Reservoirs.

MAJOR ACHIEVMENTS OF HYDRAULICS WING

  • Kotri Barrage & U/S training works (1948)
  • Taunsa Barrage & U/S training works (1952)
  • Guddu Barrage & U/S training works (1956)
  • Flood control studies on Ravi &  Chenab rivers
  • River diversion & Spillway study of Warsak dam
  • Indus Basin Replacement works involving construction of five Barrages (Chashma, Taunsa, Rasul, Marala, Trimmue) & eight link canals (1960)
  • Model studies of Mangla Dam
  • Model studies of Tarbela Dam
  • Model studies for Detail Design of Kalabagh Dam (1984)
  • Model studies of Bhasha Diamer Dam (2008).
  • Model studies of Ghazi Brotha Hydropower Project.
  • Model studies conducted for Iran, Yemen & Libya.
  • Model studies of the projects under Flood Protection Sector Project – II (FPSP-II) of the country.

SPECIAL  ACHIEVEMENTS OF HYDRAULICS WING

  • Models of tunnel No. 3, 4 & 5 of Tarbela Dam  tested at an International Laboratory.
    • Failed at Site during first operation.
    • Re-tested at Nandipur, performing satisfactorily uptill now.
  • Tarbela spillways  with flip bucket  tested at an International Laboratory.
    • Failed at site.
    • Re-tested at  Nandipur and performing properly.
  • Spillway of Nandipur Hydel Power Station designed, Model tested and executed by Czechoslovakia.
    • Failed when Operated at 1/3rd of design discharge.
    • Nandipur devised a practicable design. Now performing successfully.
  • Chashma Hydel Power Project Studies
    • Nandipur Cost   =  Rs. 1 Million
    • Sogria – France Cost  =  Rs. 15 Million
    • Recommendations were same.
