Monitoring Units in Punjab:

There are seven monitoring units of Punjab which are being supervised under the Chief Surveyor. These units / divisions are monitoring groundwater and surface water and samples of the Project “Electronic Geo-Referenced Data Base for Tubewells in Punjab”. Deputy Surveyors and Assistant Surveyors / Assistant Director Salinity Research are performing these functions. These units/divisions are Bahawalpur, D.G Khan, Faisalabad, Lahore, Multan, Sargodha and Thal.

Ground & Surface Water Monitoring:

Monitoring of surface water quality for irrigation and drinking purpose was started in 2006.

C.         Electronic Geo-Referenced Data Base for Tubewells in Punjab

A project “Electronic Geo-Referenced Data Base for Tubewells in Punjab” was designed to envisage mainly the generation of Geo-referenced database for tubewells in the province. The project will help to strategically control and regulate the indiscriminate exploitation of ground water pumpage and quantify the magnitude of groundwater pumpage with focus on sustainability and safe groundwater aquifer harvesting.

The major objectives of the project are summarized below:

  • To generate geo-referenced database and mark the precise geo-reference location of the tubewells.
  • To prepare a comprehensive and credible tubewells inventory.
  • To prepare the GIS maps for spatial location of tubewells across the province.
  • To assess spatial groundwater quality by sampling tubewell water.
